Dorothy Ann Murphy

September 1, 1937 - January 11, 2016

Biography--

Dorothy Ann (Welsh) Murphy, 78, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, January 11, at home.

Dorothy was a loving soul who accepted people for who they were. She always put others before herself, and loved spending time with her family. She opened her home and heart to many over the years. She was an excellent cook in her day and could feed a large crowd on a moment’s notice.

She was an avid seamstress in her younger years, and an avid knitter in her later years. She loved a good joke, and wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself, which was good because that provided many occasions for her family to laugh with her. She loved the various vacations she took with her kids and grandkids, and treasured the travel adventures she had in her retirement with her sister, Kathy. She never went to bed without her rosary.

Dorothy was born September 1, 1937, in Oelwein, daughter of Ralph and Grace (Barlow) Welsh. Her obligations at home on the farm meant that she never learned to swim, which she later identified as her only regret in life. She graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1961, and married Michael J. Murphy on August 19, 1961 in Oelwein. They were later divorced.

Dorothy was Director of Nursing at the Villa Maria Care Center in Fargo, and the Grundy Care Center, Parkview Gardens and Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

She will be greatly missed by her children: sons Bill (Shelley) Murphy and Steve (Jane) Murphy, both of Waterloo, and daughters, Colleen (Chuck) Knapp of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Cathy (Andy) Mills of Waterloo; thirteen grandchildren of whom she was exceedingly proud, Kevin, Megan, Dan, Hannah, Nick, Molly, Connor, Noel, Jack, Shannon, Joe, Ann and Sam; and two great grandsons, Michael and Ryan.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Grace Welsh; a brother, Lyle Welsh, and very special sister-in-law, Mary Lou Welsh. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Miller of Laguna Woods, California and Linda Echelmeyer of Norwalk, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, preceded by a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Music Ministry, or donor’s choice.
