John Dwight Calloway

December 12, 1930 - January 9, 2016

John Dwight Calloway, 85, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, January 9, 2016, at home.

He was born December 12, 1930, in Colquitt, Ga, the son of Mose and Willie Lou Bush Calloway. He married Mella Dean Holmes and they later divorced.

John served in the United States Army and was employed on the tractor line at John Deere for 30 years, where he was one of first two African American men hired, he retired in 1981.

Survivors include three daughters: Angelic Frost, Rev. Shandra Mitchell both of Waterloo, and Gwendolyn (Mike Dornbrock) Calloway of Cedar Falls; three step-daughters: Elizabeth Yost, Debbie Daniels both of Waterloo, Vickie (Rev. Floyd) Brown of Sioux City; three step-sons: DeWayne Yost of California, Douglas Yost of Alabama, and Donnie Yost of Texas; 17 grandchildren, including Danny “DJ” Mitchell Muhammad, and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Calloway Nelson of Tampa, Fla, and Agnes Calloway of Houston, Texas; a brother, Bud (Christine) Calloway of Tallahassee, Fla; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a son, John; a sister, Delores Floyd and a step-son, Stevie Walton.

Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 18, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31, assisted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.
