Grace Scribner

November 13, 1921 - January 19, 2015

Grace Esther Scribner passed from this life peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. John’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, following a brief illness.

Grace was born on November 13, 1921 in Dexter, Minnesota, to Frank and Martha (Handeland) Ernst. Grace was the fourth-born of the six “Ernst girls” -- her sisters were: Frances (Brown), Ruth (Fowler), Gladys (Leifeld), Ethel (Fowler), and Helen (Groves). She grew up in Winona, Minnesota, and graduated from Winona High School in 1940. She received her nurses training and worked at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

She married Francis C. Scribner in March of 1942. They made their home in Waterloo, Denver, and New Hartford, Iowa. Grace was employed by Rath Packaging in Waterloo for 35 years. She and her husband enjoyed making wonderful memories with family and friends. Together they pursued their dream and developed Timberline, a place where they raised a variety of animals and where Grace enjoyed the beauty of God's creation, including her many flower gardens.

Grace enjoyed rock-hunting, bird-watching, and travel as she shared adventures with her husband, sisters, friends, and many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed creating and giving arrangements made with flowers, peacock feathers, grapevine, bittersweet and pine. For Grace, every event formed the basis for a good story to be shared expressively in great detail. Grace lived a full, rewarding, and faithful life. She possessed a simple and true faith in God--that joy shone through her smile and dancing blue eyes.

She is survived by sisters-in-law Erma Solkiewicz, (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Mary Scribner, (Des Moines, Iowa), nieces, nephews, and friends of all ages including Lucille Karns who has been her friend "forever!"

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, all of her sisters and brothers-in-law, as well as some of her nieces and nephews.

Grace blessed us with many memories and is dearly loved. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of Grace’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Evansdale, Iowa with burial at Garden of Memories in Waterloo, Iowa following the service/reception. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Dahl - Van Hove - Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials in remembrance of Grace should be made at the choice of the donor.
