WATERLOO, IOWA - Hazel Mae McGowan, 99, of Davenport, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Senior Star, Davenport.

She was born in 1916, in Mason City, daughter of Leon and Pearl Thomas. She married Merlin L. McGowan on June 5, 1938, in her parents’ home. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1987.

She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. While living in the Waterloo area she was a member of TTT Chapter DW and PEO Chapter FE. After moving to Davenport she belonged to PEO Chapter JS. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport.

She is survived by a daughter, Alys Jo (Ken) Lawson of Davenport; a son, Tom (Kathy) of Raymond; two grandchildren, TJ (Lisa) McGowan of Cedar Falls and Nicole McGowan of Waterloo; five great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Edna; two brothers, Robert and Ralph Thomas of Mason City; a sister, Leona Cooperman of Stockbridge, Massachusetts; and three nephews and a niece.

Celebration of life on Tuesday, November 24, at St. John's United Methodist Church, 14th and Brady streets, Davenport, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service.

According to her wishes, she will be cremated. Inurnment will be in the Mausoleum of the Garden of Memories, Waterloo.

Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Foundation of St. John's United Methodist Church in Davenport or to Arrowhead Youth and Family Services in Coal Valley, Illinois.
