Services:
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Porte City

Visitation:
4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a Rosary Service at 4:00 p.m. Family will receive friends also one hour before the service at the church.

Cemetery:
Inurnment in the West View Cemetery, La Porte City

Biography--

Delbert William Schmitz, 72, of La Porte City, Iowa, passed away on May 24, 2015 peacefully in his sleep after a tough battle with cancer.

Delbert was born in La Porte City on September 16, 1942, the son of John W. and Nelle O. (Yarrow) Schmitz. He was one of eight children, six boys and two girls. He spent much of his youth on Wolf Creek with his brothers and sisters.

He graduated from La Porte City High School where he was well respected and admired for his athletic talents in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was Captain of the football team, class Treasurer, and Student Council President. Delbert went on to become Plant Manager of Supersweet Feeds, Monmouth, Illinois and then International Multifoods, LeMars, Iowa.

Delbert married Velma Ann Byers on September 12, 1962 and they raised one daughter Lorie Ann Mannon. Del was an avid fisherman and really enjoyed the outdoors. He especially loved the numerous fishing trips he took with his brothers. He also enjoyed golfing along with spending time with his family and friends. He had a passion for making people laugh and telling stories. His faith was very important to him as he was a devoted Catholic.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister Rozella Close.

Survivors include his daughter, Lorie (David) Mannon of Gilbert, Arizona; his grandchildren: Jason (Shawna) Mannon of Erie, CO; Adam (Stephanie) Mannon of Chandler, Arizona; and Ashley Mannon of Gilbert, Arizona; along with five great-grandchildren: Faith, Carter, Piper, Isabella, and Beau Mannon. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn (Dan) Dunkelberger; brothers: Dick (Melva) Schmitz, Ron (Linda) Schmitz, Dan (Pam) Schmitz, Larry (Kris) Schmitz, and Joe Schmitz; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
