Dorothy M. Kleppe was born May 14, 1932, on a farm near Clermont, Iowa, daughter of Charles Henry and Edith Gertrude (Light) Wander. They lived on the farm until Dorothy’s teenage years when the family moved to West Union. Dorothy graduated from West Union High School.

It was at a skating rink that she first exchanged glances with Clarion Kleppe, with whom she shared a birthday. The two married at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo on March 11, 1955 after Clarion returned from service in Germany and made their home in Waterloo.

In May 1963 Dorothy gave birth to their third child. Unfortunately, Clarion was killed in an automobile accident in October 1963, and she became a single mother focusing all of her time and attention on raising her children. After the children were raised she enjoyed spending time in public visiting with people. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and browsing at Walmart and Target where she caught many an eye with her fashionable hats. She continued to enjoy time with family going out to movies and watching her son, David, bowl.

Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at Allen Memorial Hospital at the age of 82.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarion; son, Duane Kleppe; and brother-in-law, Wesley Newsom.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Kay Hammer of Independence; son, David Charles Kleppe of Waterloo; sister, Shirley Ann Newsom of Evansdale; two granddaughters, Rachel Lynn (D.J.) Main of Independence and Diana Kay Hammer of Waterloo; and a great-granddaughter, Hailey Kay Main of Independence.

Dorothy’s family and close friends gathered for a service of remembrance on Saturday, December 27, 2014. Memorials may be directed to the family.
