Thomas “Tom” Lawrence Knipp

November 22, 1951 to March 25, 2015

Thomas “Tom” Lawrence Knipp was born November 22, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Beverly (Bonk) Knipp. He attended Columbus High School, and was very active in sports. Tom was the quarterback for the football team and was the first State Qualifier for wrestling at Columbus in the State Tournament. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1970. After high school he went to the United States Air Force Academy where he continued to use his athletic abilities as a quarterback for the Air Force football team. After the Air Force he came back to Waterloo to work for John Deere for a number of years.

He later attended the University of Northern Iowa to obtain a degree in Manufacturing Engineering, and later his Masters of Business Administration through the University of Phoenix. He spent his life as a manufacturing engineer for various companies, including Morton Thiokol where he worked on the testing program for rocket boosters used for the NASA space shuttles. Tom enjoyed spending time researching his family’s genealogy and has traced them back to 500 AD.

Tom died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the age of 63, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three aunts: Mary Luebbers, Marne Hall, and Phyllis Owens.

Tom is survived by a son Kamm (Kelly) Knipp; a daughter Vanessa (Shane) Freitag; five grandchildren: Josie, Tess and Sloane Freitag and Caden and Mia Knipp; six brothers: Stephen (Barb) Knipp, Bill (Deb) Knipp, Dave (Beth) Knipp, Tim (Brigid) Knipp, Mike (Ceil) Knipp all of Waterloo, and Bob (Julie) Knipp of Altoona; a sister Kathy (Dave) Fish of Castle Pines, Colorado; former wife and long time friend Connie Jo (Fiscus) Knipp.

Memorials directed to Columbus High School Athletics or Cedar Valley Hospice Home in lieu of flowers.
