Ken Young

October 7, 1952 - June 16, 2015

Kenneth “Ken” Joseph Young was born on October 7, 1952, in Waterloo, the son of Keith and Donna (Rose) Young. Ken grew up in Waterloo and graduated from West High with the class of 1970. He then joined the National Guard, serving in North Carolina and Iowa. In 1973, Ken moved back to Waterloo and attended the University of Northern Iowa. Ken received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in 1976, from Hawkeye Tech.

On July 8, 1977, Ken married Joyce James. He then moved to Pennsylvania and attended Baptist Bible College. He later moved back to Waterloo where he worked at John Deere for 30 years. Ken was a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church where he was active with music, AWANA, mission trips, and served on various boards. He also led a Bible study while volunteering at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center. Ken loved playing with his grandkids, especially taking them fishing in Minnesota. He enjoyed singing in quartets, listening to Southern Gospel music, and playing pinochle. Most importantly, Ken had a love for God and His Word.

Ken died at the age of 62 on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at his home following a courageous battle with brain cancer.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Ken is survived by his parents; four children, Katie (Alec) Johnston of Marshalltown, Melanie (Ben) Rasanen of Elk Run Heights, Jacob (Alaina) Young of Ackley, and Joshua Young of Waterloo; three brothers, Keith (Teri) Young of Cedar Falls, Donald (Melinda) Young of Cedar Falls, and Robert (Christine) Young of Lino Lakes, Minnesota; a sister, Diane (Brian) Hunnicutt of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and seven grandchildren, Kael, Klaire, Karsyn, and Kase Young, and Elizabeth “Ellie”, Parker, and Annie Rasanen.
