Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Stroh

September 8, 1942 to June 30, 2015

Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Stroh was born September 8, 1942 to Leo and Mary Catherine (Weber) Stroh in Los Angeles, California. Bernie graduated with honors from Dowling High School, Des Moines, Iowa in 1960. He attended the University of Iowa and Drake University. He married Marsha Quandahl on April 23, 1970 in Dover, Minnesota. They divorced in January 1988.

Bernie worked as an insurance Salesman and Bartender in the 1970s. In the 1980s he owned/operated “The Rail’s End” and sold wrestling mats nationwide through Quality mat Company from 1986 – 2014. For many years Bernie served on the Waterloo Community Development Board and was active in supporting and initiating local wrestling programs and educational format at St. John’s Catholic School and Columbus High School.

Bernie’s greatest love was spending time with his family. He was a diehard Iowa Hawkeye’s Wrestling fan an avid reader and history buff that enjoyed debate – especially on political issues.

Bernie passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Rochester’s Mayo Clinic, St. Mary’s Campus at the age of 72.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Lee Disharoon and her husband Bob of Peoria, Illinois.

Bernie is survived by his three sons: Ben Stroh, Brad (Heather) Stroh, Pete (Kenley Ellis) Stroh all of Waterloo; his ex-wife, Marsha, the “love of his life and best friend”; six grandchildren, Parker, Olivia, Sander, Dake, Lainey and Lincoln; one brother, Fred (Mimi) of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Columbus High School and the American Heart Association.
