Theodore Arthur Schuler was born on August 4, 1929 in Waterloo, Iowa: the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Currant) Schuler. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1949, with Company C, 807th Engineer Aviation Battalion, stationed at Ladd Field in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Ted was united in marriage to Helen Miller on June 29, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo; Helen preceded him in death on March 10, 2008. He was a carpenter with Local 1835 and taught many apprentices. Ted loved Waterloo. He served on many boards and was involved with numerous community projects.

He was director of building and grounds at Hawkeye Community College. Ted helped with volunteer work building churches and community buildings in Waterloo. He was a Union Business Agent for the Carpenters Local 1835 and the Teamsters Union 844. He retired from Hawkeye Community College on February 29, 1996. Ted was very involved with Immanuel and Christ Lutheran Churches.

Ted passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014 from natural causes at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids at the age of 85.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen and a sister Mary Killinger.

Ted is survived by a son Lee Schuler of Aurora, Illinois; a daughter Janice (David) Chung of Cedar Rapids; 8 grandchildren: Jedidiah Chung, Navy Veteran of Cedar Rapids, Jonathan (Kaithlyn) Chung, retired Army of Colorado, Joy Marie Chung at Washington University Law School, of St. Louis, Missouri, Joshua Chung at UNI of Cedar Falls, Jennifer Chung of Cedar Falls, Jason Chung, 12th grade at Jefferson High School of Cedar Rapids, Jaylee Chung, 10th grade at Jefferson High School of Cedar Rapids and Josie Chung, 8th grade at Trinity Lutheran of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Carl (Shirley) Schuler of Waterloo and Jerry (Judith) Schuler of Bristol, Virginia; and three sisters: Sally Spaulding of Evansdale, Betty Webb of New Bedford Massachusetts and Jean Demuth of Waterloo and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church building fund of Disabled American Veterans.
