Obituary for Mary J. Rathbone

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Mary J. Rathbone, 91, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, December 29, 2014, at UnityPoint - Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

She was born October 6, 1923, in Frederika, Iowa, daughter of Claude and Amelia (Ebert) Carroll. She married Wayne Rathbone and he preceded her in death on May 2, 1997.

She graduated from Frederika High School and served in the Women’s Army Corps. She was employed with the US Census Bureau, the University of Iowa, and Iowa State University as an interviewer and data collector and also worked at election polls.

Survived by: a son, Clay (Kim) Rathbone of Postville; two daughters, Merry Kay Backes of Jesup and Julie (Rocky) Samek of Lawton, OK; nine grandchildren: Julie Wurzer, David Bohringer, Bridget Brown, Candyce Duffy, Zane Samek, Kate Samek, Zach Rathbone, Haylee Rathbone and Olivia Rathbone; ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Preceded in death by: a son, Winston Rathbone; a daughter, Claudia Sandquist; a grandson, Winston McKay; and a son-in-law, Jerry Backes.

Services: 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at NewAldaya Lifescapes Chapel in Cedar Falls with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.
