Obituary for Elizabeth L. LaFavre

Elizabeth Louise Weiss, first generation American daughter of German immigrants Frederick and Louise Weiss, entered into the heavenly realm surrounded by her loving family on March 6.

Elizabeth was born in De Kalb, Illinois, in 1932 on January 25. A graduate of West Aurora High School in Illinois, she was a member of the National Honor Society. Her passion for fashion led her to Stephens College in Missouri, where she studied fashion design. She later embarked on a career with American Airlines, eventually relocating to Dallas where she met and married her husband of 56 years Robert Winston LaFavre on March 8, 1958. She and Robert had two children, a daughter and a son, raising them both in the Dallas area before returning to Robert's hometown of Cedar Falls in 1994.

Elizabeth channeled her unbridled energy and artistic talent even as a busy young mother into her oil paintings. Her artworks were celebrated and sold in floating galleries in Dallas and hang in many fine homes today. She and Robert were also avid antique enthusiasts. They would comb through shops and sales, loving restoring them to their original splendor. She served in Girl Scouts and on the altar guild at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dallas. In the seventies, Elizabeth enjoyed a successful career in real estate and eventually worked alongside her husband in the fashion business.

After moving to Cedar Falls, she was inducted into the OV PEO chapter, where she enjoyed rich fellowship and great intellectual stimulation. Her PEO sisters and other members of the community enjoyed the fruits of her culinary expertise and her recipes are revered and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to receive them. She is survived by her husband Robert, daughter Cynthia LaFavre Yorks, son Mark Winston LaFavre, grandchildren Ben Alexander Yorks, John Connor LaFavre and Maximillian Andrew Yorks.

A public memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015, in the Chapel at the Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.
