Leonard M. Ravn (1919-2015)

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Leonard M. Ravn, 96, of Dubuque, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

He was born March 31, 1919 in Superior, Wisconsin, son of Carl and Elnora (Paulsen) Ravn. He married Verla Sneller on May 16, 1943 in Cedar Falls. She died January 3, 2004.

He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1937 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Clerk with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1979. Leonard loved reading, music, golf, fishing and camping. He and his wife Verla enjoyed traveling together on bus trips and cruises, and they were square dancers and taught round dancing. He played drums in a local dance band and entertained by playing harmonica and reading poetry that he wrote and published under the name "The Country Poet." A special interest was serving for almost 20 years as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #42, sponsored by the Nazareth Lutheran Church and for which he was awarded many prestigious scouting honors."

Survived by: a daughter, Patricia (Charlie) Brimeyer of Dubuque; a son, Larry (Sue) Ravn of Cedar Falls; one grandson, Christopher (Paula) Ravn; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: four brothers: Elmer, Harold, Lester and Gordon Ravn; and two sisters, Betty Miller and Esther Ravn.

Services: Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church Chapel, Cedar Falls, with burial in Zion Cemetery in Sumner. Military Honors will be conducted by the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service.

Memorials may be directed to Boy Scout Troop #42 (sponsored by Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls).
