Dorothy Jane Schmit, 97, died Sunday, Nov. 23, at her apartment at the Western Home in Cedar Falls.

She was born on July 11, 1917, in Davenport, daughter of Francis Cornelius and Adella (Sartorius) Marinan. When Dorothy was eight the family moved to Waterloo where she attended St. Mary’s throughout grade school and high school. In 1939 she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls with a BA in Commerce. She married Irvin J. Schmit at Waterloo’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1940. Dorothy and Irv had six children, all of them attending St. Mary’s and Columbus High School in Waterloo, and each of them going on to attend Catholic colleges.

A daily communicant from an early age until no longer able to drive in her nineties, Dorothy was devout and died with a rosary in her hands. She was also unconventionally hip throughout her life, with an appreciation of great music, movies, and comedians from every generation. She was also a lifelong New York Yankee fan who saw Babe Ruth play in Yankee Stadium and watched Derek Jeter’s final game.

Survived by two daughters, Mary Lynne Oehlerts of Oldsmar, Fla., and Ginny (Bob) Lyon of St. Charles, Ill.; four sons, Dr. Donald W. (Carrie) Schmit of Waterloo, Dick (Jeanne) Schmit of Des Moines, Dr. Steven F. Schmit of Waterloo, and Dave Schmit of Stillwater, Minn.; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Frances Marinan of Albert Lea, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three siblings, Ruth (Walter) Enzler, Mary Frances Marinan, and William Marinan.

Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, November 29 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, with entombment immediately after at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, with a 4:00 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary and 7:00 p.m. vigil. Visitation also one hour at the church prior to Saturday’s mass.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
