Steven J. Zarifis

Steven J. Zarifis, 58, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, November 29, at Covenant Medical Center, in Waterloo.

He was born July 28, 1956 in Waterloo, Iowa, son of James and Jean Schoer Zarifis. He married Linda Gardner in 1976 in Waterloo. They were later divorced.

Steve graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1974 and the University of Iowa with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1983. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works with medical retirement in 1999.

Survivors include: his parents of Waterloo; a brother, Jeffrey (Brenda) Zarifis of Clovis, California; and a nephew, Jason Zarifis of Clovis, California.

Services will be Monday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and at the church for an hour before services on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous.

Steve was an eagle scout and attended the world jamboree in 1971, serving as a junior assistant scout master. He participated for 15 years in a lifetime research program at the Department of Neurology, UIHC, as a result of Encecephalitis. He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and a member of New Horizons Band.
