Phyllis M. Cowell, 85 of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born July 20, 1929, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Agnes Trainor Kemp.

She married Charles E. Cowell April 15, 1950, in Waterloo. He died December 23, 2003.

Phyllis graduated from Sacred Heart School and attended Mt. Mercy College. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1986.

Survived by: two daughters, Linda (Larry) Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., and Julie Niemeyer of Waterloo; four sons, Kent (Shirley) of Waterloo, Kirk (Lori) of Morgantown, Pa., Nick (Kathy) of Buckingham, and Matthew (Michelle) of Waterloo; a son-in-law, Russ Nissen of Waterloo; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her husband; a daughter, Mary Nissen.

Services will be Tuesday, April 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church.

Memorials: directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Sacred Heart Church.

Phyllis was an avid reader and volunteered at the Waterloo Public Library.
