Mark Alexander Girsch

February 17, 1922 - April 5, 2015

Mark Alexander Girsch, 93, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 5, at Northcrest Specialty Care from complications of lung cancer.

He was born February 17, 1922, in rural Gilbertville, the son of Emil and Agatha Weber Girsch. He married Mary Jane Shannon on June 26, 1943, in Waterloo and she died December 14, 1983.

Mark served in the United States Army during World War II and was employed by Illinois Central Railroad as a conductor for 44 years retiring in 1984. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include: three daughters, Ella Jane (Bruce) Givens of Evansdale, Lorraine (David) Kalkhoff of Newton, and Linda Girsch of Waterloo; two sons, Michael (Sue Fiala) of Cedar Falls and Richard Girsch of Stamford, Conn; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Millie Canfield of Rochester, Minn and Mary (Norb) Delagardelle of Jesup; one brother, Joe (Donna) Girsch of rural Gilbertville.

Preceded in death by: his parents; an infant son, Dennis Mark Girsch and a brother, Augie Girsch.

Services: Thursday, April 9, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilbertville.Full military rites will be conducted by Nugent Demuth Post 714 and Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation from 4-8 P.M. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4 P.M. rosary and 7 P.M. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the church.
