Janet Karpan

September 24, 1929 - April 15, 2015

Our dearest mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, (favorite) sister-in-Law, aunt, and great-aunt, Janet Karpan, 85, formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Lake Worth, Florida, died peacefully on April 15th, 2015, at home in Dripping Springs, Texas.

Born September 24, 1929, she lived a full and very rewarding life brimming with the love, care, and respect of her family and friends both new and old.

Jan was one of the blessed few breast cancer survivors attributed by her doctor only because of her strong will to live. She endured years of chemotherapy and lived to see her children thrive, grandchildren grow up and marry, and held four of her great grandchildren. Against all odds, she made the most of this precious gift of life and thrived for forty-seven more years.

Now, she has returned “home" and is together once again with her husband of 56 years, Matt J. Karpan who predeceased her in 2007, at the age of 93 years.

Jan was predeceased by her parents William Herman Mevis and Mamie Haakinson Mevis of Cedar Falls Iowa and Bellaire, Texas; brothers Joseph Hale Mevis of Houston, Texas and The Honorable Willis Haakinson Mevis of LaJolla, Calif.

She is survived by her three daughters Kathy K. Perry (Justin) of Columbia, Missouri; Marta K. Mattox of Dripping Springs, Texas (Jim, deceased); Julie Mevis Karpan of Upper Marlborough, Maryland and Micanopi, Florida (Jerry Holly).

She was most lovingly called "GaGa" by her grandchildren: John Whitney Perry of New York City (Devie); Anne Perry Swift of Austin, TX (Austin); Katie Perry Pryor of Athens, GA (Oliver); Alex Perry of Columbia, MO (Courtney); James S. "Jimmer" Mattox of Dripping Springs, TX; Janet "Sissi" Mattox of Dripping Springs, TX.

She was positively delighted to be a great-grandmother “GaGa” to Jack Perry, Rawle Perry, Kate Swift, and Mary Pryor.

For the past five years she was lovingly cared for at home by her three daughters who were honored and very grateful to have this most precious time with her. She never lost her quick, clever wit & unforgettable dry humor quips. The family is forever grateful for the love, care, and devotion of her caregiver Faye de a Guzman of Austin, TX who always referred to her as "Mom".

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery (next to her husband Matt) overlooking the Sunnyside Golf Course. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 30th at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Services at 400 South Street in Waterloo, where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to "Beyond Pink Team" a breast cancer support group servicing the Cedar Valley community at 4756 Charolais Dr. Waterloo, IA 50701 www.beyondpinkteam.com
