Biography--

Charles David Smith, 96, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 5 at UnityPoint Allen Hospital.

He was born March 2, 1919 in Johnson City, Tennessee, the son of Michael David and Stella Gladys Milburn Smith. He married Beulah May in June of 1951 and they were later divorced. He married Lorraine Ruth Benning in August of 1976 in Waterloo. She died July 13, 2009.

Charles graduated from Stanhope High School in 1936 and Iowa State University in 1950. He was drafted into the military service on May 5, 1941. He served in Co. H, 133rd Infantry of the 34th Red Bull Division. He did overseas service in North Africa and Italy. He served as a security guard for General Eisenhower’s office while in Algiers, North Africa and was a Combat Infantry Sergeant from Anzio Beach head north to the Appenines in Italy. He served 3 ˝ years overseas and was honorably discharged August 31, 1945.

Charles taught high school Voc. Ag. in Eldora for two years and later taught junior high school teacher in Janesville. He also owned a feed store in Sumner for five years. He became an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance in Waterloo for 23 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1976. He and his wife, Lorraine served multiple 3 year terms as Deacons and Charles served one term as an Elder. He was volunteer treasurer of the church for twenty years. He and Lorraine served as kindergarten Sunday school teachers for 18 years. He led Bible Study with a group of retired men for 20 years and also served on finance and property committees. Charles also was a reading buddy for the 3rd grade at Kingsley Elementary School.

Survivors include two sons, Charles J. “CJ” (Sandra) of Houston, Mo. and Kevin Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; a daughter, Beverly (Steve) Thurston of Alpharetta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Jeanne Kaailau of Waterloo and a brother-in-law, Wendell (Vernetta) Bennett of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a sister, Helen Ruth Osenga.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14 at Hagarty–Waychoff–Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
