Biography--

Bernice G. Schmitz, 84, of Gilbertville, died May 20 at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo.

She was born May 30, 1930, in rural Jesup, Iowa, the daughter of Phillip and Cecilia Schares Welter. She married Bertin Joseph Schmitz on June 7, 1950 at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. He died April 17, 1993.

She was a homemaker and did house cleaning for many years including the Immaculate Conception Rectory.

Survived by her 8 children Cindy (Bill) Bengston, Dan (Nancy) Schmitz, Connie (Bob) Steffen all of Waterloo, Donna Youngblut of Buckingham, Darrell Schmitz of Altoona, Lisa (Dennis) Kayser of Jesup, Beth (Dennis) Wiebbecke and Jeff (Brenda) Schmitz all of Gilbertville.
18 Grandchildren Hanna (Fred) Johnson, Aaron (Erin) Bengston, Andy (Whitney) Schmitz, Bart (Katie) Schmitz, Bridget (Ed) Pavelec, Jenny Steffen, Nick(Rachel Hogue) Steffen, Trudy (Dave) Ohrt, Rick (Jenny) Martin, Travis Youngblut, Trent Youngblut, Zoe Schmitz, Kristi (Ryan) Bear, Brittney (Jimmy) Hughes, Stacey Kayser, Amanda (Josh) Lehman, Leah Schmitz and Jordan Schmitz. 2 Step Grandchildren Jessica Wiebbecke and Jon Wiebbecke.
21 Great-grandchildren Darian, Marian, Reece, Graham, Francis, Martin, Evelyn, Solomon, Oliver, Irene, Emmeric, Max, Toby, Joanna, Dylan, Devin, Garrett, Laken, Harper, Paxton and Alayna. 3 Step Great Grandchildren Kiera, Talyiah and Alaysia.
2 Brothers Ralph (Marie Jean) Welter of Jesup and Lloyd (Shirley) Welter of LaPorte City and 4 sisters Jean Fischels and Margie Guild of Waterloo, Alma (Kenny) Schmitz of Denver, Linda (Jim) Hughes of Independence 1 Brother-in law Leo Delagardelle of Gilbertville, 2 Sister-in-Laws Jane (Mike) Klein of Gilbertville and Ceola Mowery of Janesville

Proceeded in death by her husband, 1 great-grandchild Peyton Jo Lehman, 1 sister Irma Delagardelle and 1 brother Leo Welter, 2 son-in-laws Richard Martin and Eric Youngblut

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3 pm to 8pm Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 4 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials directed to Immaculate Conception Church, Bosco System or the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Mass of Christian Burial:
Saturday May 23, 2015, 10:30am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
