Harold Hancock

January 23, 1944 - September 9, 2015

Life Legacy--

Harold Dennis “Herky” Hancock, 71, of Waterloo, died Wednesday Sept. 9 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, Iowa.

He was born January 23, 1944 in Decorah, Iowa, son of Vincent and Loretta (Devitt) Hancock.

Harold lived in Davenport, Iowa, and attended Assumption High School until his family moved to Waterloo. He graduated from Columbus High School, where he would meet Jane Ann Cowell.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1965, and was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, then posted to Germany and France.

Harold married Jane (Cowell) Hancock on August 14, 1965 at St. Edward Catholic Church and they raised two children, Mark and Michele. Harold worked for John Deere from 1965-1970, when the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to pursue a sales career. The family returned to Waterloo in 1974 and Harold returned to John Deere where he would work as a supervisor until retiring on January 1, 2001, with 32 years of service.

Although his kids worried about what he would do after retirement, he quickly put any concerns to rest. Already an avid fisherman, Harold had taken up golf in the previous decade, and he filled his post retirement years with fishing trips, golf, travel, and spending time with his family and large group of close friends. He truly valued the friendships he had forged over the years, and his friends and family were a large part of his life until the end.

After more than two decades as a bachelor, Harold met Peggy Keller and they married in a small ceremony on July 8, 2011 in Waterloo. She was taken by cancer on June 2, 2012. Although their time together was far too short, they were so happy together. Harold called her “the love of my life”, and never quite recovered from her loss. Until recently, Peggy’s dog Molly was a constant companion for Harold.

Survivors include a son, Mark (Beth) Hancock of Bettendorf; a daughter, Michele (Kody) Kramer of Aplington; three grandchildren, Declan Hancock, Kaci Mae Kramer, Alivia Scarbrough; his first wife, Jane Hancock of Waterloo; two brothers, Jim (Sharon) and Don (Susan) all of Davenport; and two sisters, Jan (Lorne) Mayer and Mary Hancock all of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 5-8 pm Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Harold “Herky” Hancock was a great friend, loving father and grandfather, who loved spending time with his extended family. A lifelong fisherman and golfer, we hope he will enjoy clear skies, large fish and many holes-in-one in Heaven. We will miss his strength and sense of humor, always.
