Biography--
Joan Elizabeth "Joni" Tietz, 80, of Waterloo, died Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Covenant Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.
Joni was born September 17, 1934 in Waterloo the daughter of Peter and K. Margaret Jurgensen Petersen. She married Ted H. Tietz November 24, 1957 at First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He died January 19, 1995.
Joni graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1952.
She was former co‑owner of Petersen & Tietz Florists and Greenhouses which was started by her parents in 1934.
She was Past President of Iowa Florists and Growers and a member of PEO Chapter MR. Joni was a Girl Scout Leader when Heidi was growing up. She was also a Christian Women’s Club speaker.
Joni was an optimistic, loving person. She strove to be the best wife and mother and then the best “Nana” ever. She had a way of making others feel at ease and part of a group. She was an outgoing and funny person. Joni’s family was her priority, especially her granddaughters. She loved to travel – taking her granddaughters on trips for spring break and traveling to see relatives in Denmark.
Survivors include a daughter Heidi De Silva and her husband Julio, a son Jeremy Tietz and his wife René, both of Waterloo; three granddaughters: Kalli, Reawna, and Reegan; a brother Henrik (Pat) Petersen of Cedar Falls; and her flower shop and greenhouse family.
Joni is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother George Petersen.
