Biography

Harold passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born on October 21, 1932 to Dale LeRoy Schoonover and Ruby Rice Schoonover in Jackson Township, Benton County.

Harold graduated from Dysart High School in 1951. He served three years in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1956. Harold married Marian Sylva Hanus on August 27, 1955 in Traer, Iowa. She died January 13, 2014.

He graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1959. He was employed by Cities Service Oil Co. & Gulf Oil Corp from 1959 to 1967. He then worked at Lattas, Inc. which later became Control-O-Fax from 1968 to 1981, at which time Harold was able to purchase the office products division and changed the name to Office Concepts LTD. He retired December 16, 2002 and sold the company to his son Ross Schoonover, Steve Mohlis, Jerry Spurget, and Nancy Olson.

Harold served as vice president Memorial Park Cemetery Association Board, past president on Salvation Army Board, the YMCA, Waterloo Jaycees, and Waterloo Downtown Rotary Club. He served as County Chair of Cancer Drive, worked on fundraiser drives for the Republican Party and UNI Dome. He was a member of the YMCA, Waterloo Elks Club, Sunnyside Country Club, Waterloo United Methodist Church and Dysart American Legion.

Harold W. Schoonover is survived by his sons: Steve (Karen), Waterloo, Ross (Andi), Waterloo, and Jeff (Virginia), Wellington, Colorado; daughter Ann (Marty) Herder, Chandler, Arizona; brother Richard (Mary) Schoonover, Vinton; 9 grandchildren: Josh, Ashley, Amanda, Shelby, Luke, Brittany, Kristina, Samantha, and Gabrielle; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Lalia Schoonover, Victorville, California; and brothers-in-law: Bob (Barb) Engel and Vernon (Dorothy) Hanus, both of Traer.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Ruby along with brothers: William (Arlene) Schoonover of Dysart and Dale Schoonover Jr. of Victorville, California; sisters: Evelyn Brown Elliott of La Porte City, Glennis Staker of Traer, and Shirley Welter of Waterloo and nieces, nephews and cousins.
