Biography--

Merna L. Haggin, 87, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Waverly/Shell Rock, died at Windhaven Assisted Living Center of the Western Home Communities on July 29, 2015, of natural causes.

She was born in Swanton, Iowa on November 16, 1927, daughter of George L. and Maud M. Prugh Jaquis. She graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1945. She married Richard Haggin August 26, 1956 in Des Moines. He died August 23, 2014.

She worked at JC Penney in Waverly, Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Waverly and Des Moines, and Waterloo Community School District for 10 years retiring from West High School cafeteria in 1987.

She was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church teaching Sunday school and was active with the church circle, past president of Waterloo Beta Pi Chapter #1939 of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and held Fourth degree of Pallas Athene.

God and family was the bedrock upon which Merna built her life. She was a dutiful wife, a selfless and compassionate mother, and friend with a heart of gold. Merna always did her best to put the needs of others before her own, something her great faith instilled in her. She loved being outdoors whether it was going on walks or spending time in the garden. She made the most out of her time in the kitchen with baking and cooking, especially when it came time for goodies at Christmas.

Merna was never one to let her own fears get in the way, making sure that despite her own fear of the water that her children learned how to swim, or making sure the grandchildren spent some time at the pool. She was the kind of woman Proverbs 31 told us about, with her gentle nature, deep faith, and love for her family. She will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Merna is survived by her daughters: Eileen Cahall and her husband Gene of Goose Creek, South Carolina; Leslie Haverkamp and her husband Dwight of Dumont, Iowa; Georgia Arant and her husband Darrell of Newberry, South Carolina; 11 grandchildren: Richard (Breanna) Cahall, Curtis (Theresa) Cahall, Christy Cahall, Alicia (Tony) Junk, Kourtney (Kenneth) Hearn, Autumn Haverkamp, Sean (Heather) Styron, Christopher Styron, Joseph Styron, Curtis Arant, and Lydia (Amos) Hommel, as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers: Clyde Hall, Paul Jaquis, and Gerald Jaquis; and sisters: Dorothy Leuch, Ruth Lamfers, Georgia Jaquis, Mary Williams, Irene Whiteside and Janet Barnes.
