Biography--

Joan Burton, 82, of Waterloo died Sunday, August 30, 2015 at UnityPoint Health ‑ Allen Hospital. Joan was born August 29, 1933 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Roy Arthur and Gene (McClenahan) Ewers. She graduated from Iowa City - City High School in 1951 and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1955.

Joan was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Assoc., P.E.O. Chapter IX, and Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Joan was very active in her younger years, enjoying tennis, golf, snow skiing, boating, and ping pong. Her activities became limited with the progression of MS, but she remained an avid swimmer for many years. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. Her faith and her family were her highest priorities, followed closely by her dedication to the Iowa Hawkeyes. She enjoyed traveling and in college sailed to Europe as a member of the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders.

Survivors include her three children and their families: son Steve Burton, his wife Maria of San Diego, California, and their children Meghan, Emma, and Jake; son Jim Burton, his wife Amanda of Atlanta, Georgia, and their children Will and Callen; daughter Kerry Powers, her husband Brad of Tampa, Florida, and their children Ben, Grace, and Sam. Joan is also survived by her twin sister Jean (Ewers) Noser of The Villages, Florida.

She is preceded in death by a brother Jack Ewers.
