Borland, Evelyn

Biography--

Evelyn Laurel Luth Borland, 90, formerly of Waterloo and Oelwein, Iowa and Mesa, Arizona died peacefully on July 29, 2015 in Reno, Nevada with her daughter Audrey at her side.

Evelyn was born on August 2, 1924 in Waterloo, Iowa to George and Anna Heinig Luth. She graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1943 and rarely missed a class reunion.

At age 15 she attended the 1939 New York World's Fair with her grandmother, mother, sisters Dorothy and Barbara and brother Bob.

Evelyn enjoyed her job as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Waterloo until she married the love of her life, Holly Borland, on June 24, 1945. She later worked as the Secretary to the Director of Nursing at Schoitz Hospital and also enjoyed that job and the many friends she made there.

Evelyn and Holly met under the mirrored globe at the Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo. When asked separately what attracted each to the other, they both said he/she was a great dancer. They were truly in love and shared a wonderful life for 67 years. They could still jitterbug into their 80s.

Evelyn once said of raising their five daughters, “I really worked hard but it was the happiest time of my life.” Evelyn loved cats, her violin, daisies, Shirley Temple, teaching her grandchildren to fish, boating, Clear Lake Iowa, golfing, playing the slots and her trips to Hawaii, Europe and Australia and their many friends.

After their retirements Evelyn and Holly snow birded between their home in Lansing, Iowa overlooking the Mississippi River and El Mirage Senior Community in Mesa, Arizona.

After a car accident in 2012 Evelyn rarely spoke, except to say I love you. She smiled often. She adored every one of her gentle care givers at Longevity Residential Care in Reno.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Arthur and Robert, two sisters Carol and Dorothy [Ronald] Guinn, her husband Holly and their daughter Barbara Borland.

She is survived by her daughters Terry [Donald] Glasco of Seaside, CA, Carolyn [Herbert] Milbach of Loveland, CO, Audrey [Greg] Titus of Reno, NV and Diane [Edward] Anderson of Plainfield, IL, twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren as well as her sister Barbara [Lou] Nelson of Omaha, NE.
