LA PORTE CITY - RoseMary Niemeyer-Hartsook, 70, of La Porte City, died at home Friday, Nov. 21, 2014.

She was born May 16, 1944, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Francis and Madeline (Romano) Santinello. She married John Niemeyer at the Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Dec. 4, 1965; he died in 2006. She married Tim Hartsook, D.D.S., on March 31, 2011, in La Porte City.

RoseMary was a 1965 graduate of Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing, New York, and received her MSN from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill. In 1965 Rose worked in the psychiatric and ICU units at Kings County, before moving to Iowa in late 1965. She worked at Allen Hospital, where she assisted in opening the first ICU in the area. Later, she joined the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center, where she was Director of Nursing for 33 years, retiring in 2011.

Survived by her husband, Tim Hartsook of La Porte City; three daughters, Erin (Darby) Wittenburg of Readlyn, Robin Niemeyer of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kristin (Matt) Brooks of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Dayten and Dallas Wittenburg of Readlyn; two brothers, Joseph (Eileen Walsh) Santinello and John (Linda) Santinello, all of New York; three sisters, Catherine Santinello of New York, Dorothea “Dottie” (Arthur) Accardo of Bowie, Md., Madeline (Myron III) Baldwin of Wethersfield, Conn.; and a brother in-law, Rick Niemeyer of Pittsburg, Calif.

Preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; and a stillborn son.

Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment in the West View Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at La Porte City Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service at 4:30 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center - Recreation Department.

Rose will be remembered by hundreds of people for whom she directed care for their family members in La Porte City, essentially being on-call, 24-7 for 33 years. She also pursued interests in gardening, flowers, photography, science reading, and was renowned for her expertise in quilting. Most importantly, she enjoyed the years rearing three daughters and two grandchildren, guiding them in their many activities.
