[Semi Weekly Iowa State Reporter, Friday, January 17, 1902, Waterloo, Iowa]
(From Thursday's Daily)

William Stead, the well known brickmaker, died this morning very suddenly at his home at 726 West Mullan Avenue. Mr. Stead arose this morning, apparently in his usual health. He ate a hearty breakfast, but shortly after the meal said that he was not feeling very well and that he, thought a short walk in the fresh air would do him good. He want out for a walk and returned about an hoar or so later and sat down in a chair. While thus sitting he suddenly expired at about 10 o'clock. A physician was called but nothing could be done to restore life. Apoplexy was pronounced to be the cause of death.

Mr. Stead has been suffering to some extent during the winter from a pain in the chest. This usually affected him in the mornings and would pass off as the day advanced. He felt quite well this morning as at any time in the last month and his death came so unexpectedly to his family as to prove a severe shock.

The deceased was born in Cambridge, England, August 10, 1838, and came to America in 1862. He settled first at Detroit where he lived for about eight years and then came to Waterloo.

He was married in Cedar Falls to Miss Matilda Duke, who survives him, with four children. The latter are: Frank Stead, Hopkinton, George, Alice and Archibald of this city.

Mr. Stead, has been engaged in the business of brickmaking, in which his sons, George and Archie have been associated with him. He was a member of the First M. E. church and a man who had the respect and esteem of all who knew him.

The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home on West Mullan Ave., conducted by Rev. J. E. Johnson. Interment will be in Elmwood.
