[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Thursday, November 20, 2014]

WATERLOO - Vernita Ann Holmquist, 75, of Las Vegas, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.

She was born to Vernon and Taimi Maki Herrmeyer on Aug. 4, 1939, in Virginia, Minn. She married Nels Holmquist in 1959, and they later divorced. She married Jack Wilson, and they later divorced.

Vernita graduated from Denver Iowa High School, and then attended Patricia Steven Modeling School, Chicago. She was Black Hawk County’s first female deputy sheriff, serving for 10 years before she moved to Las Vegas, where she worked in the Metro jail for another 10 years before retiring.

Survived by a son, Steven of Chicago; three sisters, Judy Reisner of Casa Grande, Ariz., Peggy Megivern of Waterloo and Brenda (Loren) Wolfensperger of Englewood, Colo.; two brothers, David (Joyce) Herrmeyer of Cedar Falls and Dennis Herrmeyer of Elkhart, Ind.; two grandsons, Dennis and Craig of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and a nephew, David Megivern.

There will be no memorial service.

Since Vernita lived by the Golden Rule, treating others the way she would want to be treated, her memory would be served if it inspired those who remember her to “pay it forward.”
