[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Friday, November 14, 2014]

CEDAR FALLS - Lisbeth “Liz” Rugen Walker, 67, of Drakes Branch, Va., formerly of Cedar Falls, died at home Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014.

She was born Sept. 24, 1947, in Waterloo, daughter of Vernon and Elizabeth Rugen. She married Samuel “Phil” Walker on Feb 5, 1972.

Liz graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1966. She attended Iowa State University and obtained a degree in clothing and textile design. She worked in retail in Sacramento, Calif., and in administration for Stanley Land & Lumber, Drakes Branch. She was a charter member of the Charlotte County Master Gardeners and The Southside Herb Society.

Survived by her husband; two brothers, Jeffrey Rugen of Cedar Falls and David (Karen) Rugen of Seattle; and a niece, Lindsey, and a nephew, Alex, both of Seattle.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Drakes Branch Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, Va.

Liz was a free spirit who preferred to concentrate on the beautiful things in life -- good food (preferably desserts), good books (mostly mysteries), nice clothes, her slightly out-of-control gardens, and especially her many friends. Her four-year battle with cancer was an inspiration to those who knew her.
