LA PORTE CITY - Margaret Eileen Purdy, 97, of La Porte City, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home following a lengthy illness.

She was born July 4, 1917, in rural La Porte City, daughter of Glen R. and Margaret A. (Smith) Foss. She married Nicholas A. Schmitz on Nov. 6, 1940; he died on Aug. 1, 1944. She married Merville W. Purdy on May 22, 1948; he died on April 6, 1986.

Margaret worked for various factories including Gator Machines, Micro Switch and Waterloo Industries. She retired Dec. 1, 1979, from Waterloo Industries as the first woman retiree. After retirement she worked at Casey’s General Store in La Porte City. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survived by two daughters, Linda (Stan) Schneider of Cedar Falls and Eileen Buck of La Porte City; five sons, Glen of Waterloo, Nicholas (Linda) of Waterloo, Robert (Rosie) of Washburn, William (Cora) of Algoma, Wis., and Merville (Vicki) of Forestville, Wis.; 26 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Verna Mae Dengler of Cedar Falls; three sisters-in-law, Millie Foss of Cedar Falls, Kathleen Foss of La Porte City and Novie Foss of La Porte City; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Elwin, Glen and Harold Foss; a son-in-law, Lee Buck; and two nephews, Robert Foss and Thomas Dengler.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilbertville. Public visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at La Porte City Funeral Home, where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be held for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte City or the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

Margaret enjoyed being with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved watching the birds and listening to music, especially Lawrence Welk and polka music.
