CEDAR FALLS - Janet “Jan” Hawley, 75, of Manhattan, Kan., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan.

She was born Dec. 6, 1938, in Minneapolis, daughter of Roy and Edna Green Nelson. She married Dale Hawley on Aug. 16, 1959, in Cedar Falls.

She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1956 and Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in 1959. Since 1966 they have resided in Manhattan, where Jan was active in her church and community activities.

Survived by her husband; three daughters, Julie (Ken) Zimmerman of Houston, Jenise (Bryan) Smith of Round Rock, Texas, and Joyce (Paul) Bright of Fenton, Mo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marybeth Nelson of Minneapolis.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services were held Sept. 29.

Jan grew up on a 10-acre “truck farm” in Cedar Falls -- where they raised strawberries, sweet corn and other vegetables -- that was located just west of the present Sartori Hospital Clinic; the land was sold in the 1950s and became part of a housing addition.
