WATERLOO - Robert L. Nielson, 76, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

He was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Grundy County, son of Albert and Alice Boldt Nielson. He married Joan M. Kelly March 17, 1978, in Waterloo.

Mr. Nielson worked for Rath Packing Co. for 20 years, farmed in Postville and also worked at John Deere for three and a half years. Following retirement, he spent many years repairing lawnmowers and snowblowers and was nicknamed the "lawn mower man."

He was a member of the Waterloo AMVETS Post No. 19 and the American Legion Post No. 138.

Survived by his wife; eight sons, Raymond (Kandee) Nielson of Indiana, Mike (Patti) Hack, Scott Hack (Nancy) and Dennis Nielson, all of Oklahoma, Kenneth Hack, Thomas Hack Collins, David Nielson and Rick Nielson; six daughters, Vicki Kinard, Marge (Bob) Dehart, Susie (Lee) Bell of Montana, Kim Hack-Sherrill, Kathy Carter of Oklahoma and Pam (Gene) McNamara; 35 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Gaffney; a brother-in-law, Milton Bristow; and sons-in-law, JC Kinard and Edward Sherrill.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Linden United Methodist Church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post # 138 and the V.F.W. Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
