CEDAR FALLS - Robert William Messer, 83, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Waterloo, son of Vernon and Ruth Flemming Messer. He married Hazel Porath on June 2, 1956, in Newell.

Robert graduated from Orange Township High School in 1949; received his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1953 and his master's degree from Northern Colorado University, Greeley, in 1958. He was an administrator and junior high principal at Peet Jr. High for 30 years, retiring in 1993. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he also was a member of Kiwanis, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Garden Club, Black Hawk County Retired Teachers Association and Phi Delta Kappa.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Ted (Diane) of Cedar Rapids and Scott (Sandy) of Frisco, Texas; three daughters, Jan (Steve) Gripp of Lenexa, Kan., Teri (Mark) Frankum of Fayetteville, Ark., and Kathy (Butch) Stricker of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren, Nathan, Cole, Timothy, Matt, Curt, Ryan, Kristen, Jessica, Elizabeth, and Rachel; and a brother, John (Carolyn) of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial Thursday in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Robert Messer Scholarship Fund through the Cedar Falls Community School Foundation, the church and Cedar Valley Hospice.
