WATERLOO - Donna M. Hershberger, 58, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home after a long and courageous fight with cancer.

She was born Sept. 5, 1950, in Waterloo, the daughter of Paul Gnagy Hershberger and Frances Henrietta (Ehr) Hershberger. She grew up on the family farm south of Jesup and attended St. Athanasius School in Jesup and Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, graduating with the class of 1968. She then attended Hawkeye Community College, Waterloo, and received her degree in 1977 as a licensed practical nurse. She later attended Northeast Iowa Community College, Calmar, graduating as a registered nurse in 1977. She worked as a registered nurse at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, for more than 35 years in various departments. She retired in 2007 due to her medical condition.

Donna was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo; she also served as a board member of the Women's Softball Association for several years. She enjoyed the outdoors, jet skiing and especially downhill skiing in Winter Park, Colo. Donna loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed having garage sales and living life to its fullest.

She is survived by three brothers, Marvin Hershberger, Roger (Kathleen) Hershberger and Merle (Barbara) Hershberger, and a sister, JoAnn (Kenneth) Seliger, all of Jesup; seven nephews; two nieces; and a great-nephew. She also leaves behind her best friend, Connie Niemeyer of Waterloo, and two loving cats, Sox and Callie.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with the Rev. Louis Jaeger as celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 19, at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and vigil service at 7 p.m. The casket also will be open for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Memorials will be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.
