WATERLOO - William Maxwell Clark, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, of natural causes.

He was born March 17, 1922, in Waterloo, son of Claude Alvin (C.A.) Clark and Leila Buck Clark. He married Barbara Jane Roberts on Nov. 25, 1951, in Wellesley Hills, Mass.

He served his country as an officer in the Navy during World War II and the Korean campaign. He received commendations during both hitches for efficiently run operations.

He graduated from West High and the University of Iowa with a degree in business administration. He was president of his senior class and of his fraternity.

He owned and operated Repass Automobile Company (with his father) and started the Clark Supply Corporation (with his son). He sold Clark Supply and retired in 1976.

He was proud to take a leadership position in numerous local organizations. Among them: he was the first president of Splash Inc., swim club. He was a board member and then president of: the Waterloo YMCA, Black Hawk Family Service League and the Minnie Crippen Home. He was a trustee and active member of his churches. Bill volunteered for SCORE, was active with Hawkeye Community College, and was a Friends of the Library Board member. Each organization benefited from his organizational skills and outgoing personality.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark (Marty) Clark, and one daughter, Leila (Brian) Girsch, all of Waterloo; five grandchildren, C.A. (Michelle) Clark of Bradenton, Fla., Christa (Andy) Miehe, and Ryan and Molly Girsch, both of Waterloo, and Michael Girsch of Dubuque; and two great-grandchildren, Evangeline Miehe and Cutter Clark.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Clark Cochrane and Zeta Elinor Clark.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Central Christian Church, 3475 Kimball Ave. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway.

Bills suggested memorial would be to take your significant other out for a nice dinner and raise a toast to a good guy and real gentleman. Failing that, memorials may be directed to the Community Foundation of Waterloo/Cedar Falls.
