MARBLE ROCK - Kenneth Eugene Melka, 78, of Marble Rock, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Buffalo Township, Buchanan County, son of Henry and Mabel Binning Melka. He married Mildred White June 22, 1968, at the Methodist Church in Waterloo.

He received his education at East High School in Waterloo. On Feb. 12, 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 7718th Sig. Sch at Ausbach, Germany. He received an honorable discharge March 15, 1947.

Mr. Melka returned to Waterloo and was employed at Galloway Manufacturing and later at Titus Manufacturing as a press operator. He was last employed for Bruns Machine, retiring in 1991.

He enjoyed fishing along the Shell Rock River and going camping. They spent more than 14 years wintering in Texas, where he enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and going sight seeing.

Survived by his loving wife; three sons, James Backen and Michael (Melissa) Backen, both of Waterloo, and Bud Backen of Cordova, Ill.; a son-in-law, Al Hintz of Janesville; 10 grandchildren, Scott Hintz, Chris Hintz, Jim Backen, Kenny Backen, Teffaney Backen, Donny Backen, Haley Backen, Mark Backen, Tammy Backen and Jenney Perry; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Howard (Joy) Melka of Marble Rock.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Hintz; a son, Ronald Backen; and a brother, Donald.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with burial in Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock. There will be no visitation.
