HUDSON - Marchêta Bartels, 79, of Hudson, died at home Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014.

She was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Andover, Southampton, England, daughter of Frank Richard and Kathleen Avis Cooke Sanderson. She married Melvin H. Bartels on Aug. 15, 1953, at St. Nicholas Church in Newbury, Berkshire, England.

Marchêta worked as a nurse’s aide at Schoitz Memorial Hospital, and was a sales clerk at JC Penney Co., both in Waterloo. She later worked at Saylor’s Southside convenience store in Hudson. She was a member of the Hudson United Methodist Church.

Survived by her husband; a son, John (Amy) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four daughters, Cheryl Bartels of Hudson, Angela (Dave) Klippel of Shawnee, Kan., Sheila Steffen (Chris Reynolds) of Independence and Jill (Joe) Arquette of Athens, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Bryan, David, Paul, Sean, Taylor, Nick, Caitlin and Ian; and two great-grandchildren, Mara and Paige.

Preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Malcolm Sanderson.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hudson United Methodist Church, preceded by an hour of visitation, with inurnment in England at a later date. Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, Waterloo, is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Marchêta treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed a variety of activities in her life, including bowling, gardening, sewing, reading and traveling. She was a talented artist and excelled at drawing, painting and floral arranging.
