Steven J. Murphy, 59, of Elma, formerly of Waterloo and Cresco, died at home Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, after a long illness with progressive supra nuclear palsy.

He was born March 3, 1955, in New Hampton, son of LuVerne and Lucille Stevens Murphy.

Steve graduated in 1974 from Crestwood High School in Cresco. He served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in Public Administration and was a handyman, also worked in plumbing, and flooring, and more recently, as a custodian for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District.

Survived by six siblings, Russell Murphy (Suzanne) of Elma, Dennis Murphy (Crystal) of Central City, Jeffrey Murphy (Wendy) of Cresco, Teresa Popko (Richard deceased) of Milwaukee, Wis., Colleen Kenealy (Phil) of Cedar Falls, and Erin Murphy of Milwaukee.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Richard Popko.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial with military honors in Calvary Cemetery, both in Elma. Visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Conway-Markham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial fund is being established in Steve’s name.
