WATERLOO - William Louis Winkler, 74, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 5, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 26, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Louis and Beatrice Hutzenbuehler Winkler. On Aug. 10, 1968, he married Judy Gruber at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.

He graduated from Loras Academy, then received his masters from the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the U.S. Marines Corps. William worked at River Hills School Area 7 for 35 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he worked at the food bank.

Survived by his wife, Judy; a son, Chad (Tina Marie Opbroek) of Conrad; a daughter, Tracy (Gregory) Tippery of St. John, Ind.; a half brother, John Winkler of Las Vegas; three sisters, Betty Birch, Eileen Heiar and June Giesemann, all of Dubuque; and a half sister, Joyce Sunderland of Hazel Green, Wis.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, An Overton Family Service, with a 6:30 p.m. vigil service.

Memorial fund is being established.

William enjoyed golfing and loved delivering telephone books.
