WATERLOO - Mathius I. “Matt” Fernau, 70, of Waterloo, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1944, in Independence, son of Lyle O. and Beatrice Fowlkes Fernau. He married Marie L. Bunnell on June 24, 1967, at First Presbyterian Church in Jesup.

Matt graduated from St. John’s High School in Independence in 1962, and he served in the U.S. Army. He worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing, Central Battery and Electric and later at Andrews Auto Supply as a salesman, retiring in 2009. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Michelle (Michael) Schellhorn of Raymond; a son, Joseph (Carmen) of Wellman; six grandchildren, Megan, Emma and Tye Schellhorn and Levi, Ruby and Sadie Fernau; and three sisters, Thelma Jean Foster of Jesup, Rosemary (Richard) Geary of Oelwein and Mary Paden of Fredericka.

Preceded in death by his three brothers, Norman, Oscar and Loren; and five sisters, Merle Zuke, Marjory Remetch, Catherine Dawson, Grace Fernau and Donna Spece.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery with military rites by Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
