Harold Christian Schmitz, 82, of Sumner, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Lawrence and Susan Delagardelle Schmitz. He married Rita Kane Jan. 27, 1948, at St. Francis Catholic Church (Barclay), near Dunkerton.

Mr. Schmitz and his wife farmed east of Raymond for 10 years and then moved to a farm northwest of Sumner in 1960. They retired from farming in 1986.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Gary (Cathy) and Ronald (Debbie), both of Sumner; six daughters, Rebecca (Tad) Boos of New Hartford, Debra Schmitz and Pamela (Patrick) Downing, both of Waterloo, Janet (Gene) Blazek of Fredericksburg, Nancy (Joel) Meyer of Sumner and Mary Lou (John) Gorsky of Lisle, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth (Alma) of Denver.

Preceded in death by a stepgrandson; and two sisters, Marjery Kirchoff and Marlys Schares.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Sumner. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, where there will be a 4 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. parish Scripture service, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
