WATERLOO - John R. Patchin, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 24, 1922, in Platteville, Wis., son of Albert and Sophia LaVere Patchin. He married Margaret Cookinham on March 24, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Mr. Patchin was a graduate of Independence High School, Independence, and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. He was a truck driver for H&W, retiring in 1982, and also was the business agent for Local 844 Teamsters Union.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Barbara (Scott) Hilyard of Waterloo, Beverly (Jack) Stevens of Cedar Falls and Roberta (Craig) Gaulke of Urbandale; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert "Bud" (Janice) of Platteville, Wis.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, A.D. Patchin and Gerald Patchin; and a sister, Anna Jean Patchin.

Services were 10:30 a.m. today at Queen of Peace Catholic Church school chapel, East Fourth and Parker Streets, (old St. Mary's site) with full military rites conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Inurnment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street was in charge of arrangements.
