WATERLOO - Douglas Franklin Carpenter, 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009. at Friendship Village.

He was born April 15, 1921, in Storm Lake, son of Carroll and Elmeda Bakken Carpenter. He married Helen Marie Jensen on Dec. 5, 1942, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She died Nov. 19, 2007.

Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He started Carpenter Plumbing in 1952, retiring in 1980. He was a charter member of Home Builders of Waterloo and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He also was a past commander of the American Legion.

Survived by three sons, Douglas A. (Nancy), Robert C. (Carolyn), and Gary C. (Kit); a daughter, Sally (Tom) Kresser; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Kenneth.

Services: noon Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo American Legion Becker-Chapman Post 138. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Serenity Funeral & Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Waterloo Elks Lodge No. 290.
