WATERLOO - Vernon A. Steva, 84, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

He was born Nov. 13, 1929, in Marion, son of Leonard A. and Mildred Fern Hamlin Steva. He married Muriel Mae Franzen on Aug. 23, 1968, in the original Grace Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

Vernon served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked at Rath Packing Co., drove semi-truck from coast to coast, owned and operated Milvern Guest Home in Waterloo for 32 years and worked as a machinist for John Deere for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He was a past board member of Grace Lutheran Church, Quiet Birdman Club, AMVETS and the DAV.

Survived by his wife; his children, Merle (Patsy) Steva and Cynthia (Gene) Minikus, both of Waterloo, Mark (Debbie) Steva of Las Vegas, Vernon Steva Jr. of Hudson, Denise (Frank) Bruno of Naperville, Ill., Ray Douglas (Shelly) Steva of Waterloo and TaJohnna “T.J.” (Christy) Steva of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, the Rev. Merle (Evelyn) Steva of Portland, Maine.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Waterloo, with military honors conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the Army National Guard Honors Detail. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel and for an hour before services Friday at the church. Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon enjoyed flying, motorcycle riding, roller skating, fishing, traveling and spending winters in Florida.
