WATERLOO - Howard A. Heiberger, 95, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center of natural causes.

He was born June 29, 1919, in Ryan, son of Arthur and Ona Voelschow Heiberger. He married Lillian Smith on July 20, 1946, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. She died Nov. 22, 2010.

Howard graduated from Manchester High School in 1938. He worked as a carpenter for Jens Olesen & Sons Construction for more than 30 years, retiring as a superintendent in 1982. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was the recipient of a Purple Heart, received an honorable discharge in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant and was a tank destroyer platoon commander.

Howard was a charter member of Grace Reformed Church and past vice president of the Consistory, an elder and deacon and volunteered his carpentry skills for many years at church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 138.

Survived by a son, Randall of Waterloo; a daughter, Maureen (Brent) Hastings of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Calvin Hastings of Waterloo and Wade Hastings of Apopka; and a sister-in-law, Rose Heiberger of Delhi.

Preceded in death by twin daughters, Sharon Kay and Shirley May; a daughter-in-law, Valerie Heiberger; a sister, Irene Wilson; and a brother, Louis.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Reformed Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Waterloo Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be for two hours before services Friday at the church. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Grace Reformed Church or Becker-Chapman Waterloo American Legion Post 138.
