Melvin Anton Babinat, 83, of Fairbank, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, from complications of a stroke.

He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Voorhies, son of Adolph Albert and Marie Clara Svoboda Babinat. He married Bernice Federspiel on Sept. 28, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertsville.

Mr. Babinat was a retired farmer and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survived by his wife; five sons, Michael (Debra) of Cedar Falls, Ronald (Lori) of Waterloo, James (Sally) of Big Bend, Wis., Eugene (Jo) of Sour Lake, Texas, and Kenneth (Tracy) of Rocklin, Calif.; five daughters, Barbara (Dale) Wille and Judy (David) Kolbeck, both of Waterloo, Yvonne (Edward) Smith of Marion, Jane (Fred) Weber of Jesup and Helen (Alan) Heitz of Aurora; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis of Reinbeck and Adolph of Hudson; and a sister, Mary Ann Bryon of Princeton, Mo.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, John and Siemon; and a granddaughter.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank, with burial in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Fairbank American Legion Fortsch-Duffy Post 552. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Woods Funeral Home, Fairbank, with a 3:30 p.m. parish rosary, a 6:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.
