WATERLOO - John P. Sandoval, 97, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at Friendship Village.

He was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Minneapolis, son of Benito and Hermina Porrez Sandoval. He married Maria Julianna Gonzales on Aug. 23, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church, Fort Madison; she died May 18, 2012.

John graduated from Fort Madison High School and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa. He was an executive engineer for 40 years at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 1980. He worked five years at Denso; taught small engine repair at Hawkeye Institute of Technology; repaired engines at Platt’s Nursery; was also a tour guide at John Deere Engine Works; and was a founding member of the Latin American Club.

Survived by a son, Gregory of Las Vegas; two daughters, Irene (Larry) Duis of Las Vegas and Margaret (Terry) Woodward of Cedar Falls; two daughters-in-law, Linda Sandoval of Waterloo and Sandra Sandoval of Windsor, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Toni Mosqueda of Des Moines and Tinnie (Johnny) Mendez of Fort Madison; a brother, Frank (Bette) of Goodyear, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Gonzalo Mena of Sterling, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Irene Sandoval of Fort Madison.

Preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Michael and Steven; four grandchildren, Chad Sandoval, Aaron Duis and twins, Trevor and Tyler Sandoval; four brothers, Paublo and Baltizar, both in infancy, Manuel and Joseph “Teddy” (Frances); and four sisters, Lupe (Frank) Martinez, Mary (Jack) Martinez, Rosie Mena and Lucy (Hollis) Honadel.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Village or Cedar Valley Hospice.

John traveled extensively all over the world, trouble-shooting for John Deere.
