CEDAR FALLS - Dr. Gerald L. Smith, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Palo Alto County, son of Melvin and Lida Miles Smith. He married Marguerite "Peg" Shane on July 4, 1944, in San Francisco.

Dr. Smith graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1936, attended Emmetsburg Junior College and graduated from the American Institute of Business. He received his medical degree from Illinois College of Chiropody, where he received the Faculty Award for proficiency in orthopedics. He practiced in Waterloo until retiring in 1995. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a past president of the Waterloo Lions Club, Iowa Podiatry Association and Peace Lutheran Church Council in Clayton. He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church Council, Waterloo Elks, American Legion, Waterloo AMVETS, AMVETS Choral Association and Waterloo/Cedar Falls Choral Association.

Survived by a daughter, Cheri (Rod) Mountain of Douglasville, Ga.; two sons, Doug (Julie) of Cedar Rapids and Chris (Jane) Evansdale; six grandchildren, Cheli (Rick) Basham of Delaware, Ohio, Jerry (Misty) Mountain of Columbus, Ohio, Eric Smith and Emily Smith, both of Cedar Rapids, and Cody Smith and Abby Smith, both of Evansdale; and a brother, Maurice Smith of Minneapolis.

Preceded in death by a brother, Orville; and an infant son.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home, with military flag presentation by American Legion Post 138. Family inurnment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Christian Crusaders Radio Ministry or Peace Lutheran Church, Clayton.
