William T. "Bill" Bartels, 77, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born April 11, 1926, in Oelwein, son of William H. and Leta Bennett Bartels. He married Patricia Jean Kelley November 15, 1948 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

Bill graduated from Oelwein High School in 1944 and was a route salesman for the former Day Dairy, Cedar Falls, for several years. He was assistant district manager for Jewel Tea Co. for 13 years and appliance department manager at K-Mart on University for seven years. He and and his wife owned and operated the Pizza Shack in Denver for eight years. A stroke forced him to retire in 1983. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bill was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church where he was a deacon for several years, commander of American Legion Post 138, Waterloo, for three years, secretary for Waterloo Memorial Board and also active in the AMVETS post 19 for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Waterloo. Two sons, Richard(Kathy) of Waterloo and James of Center Point; a daughter, Stacy Bartels of Oelwein; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother; Vernon(Pat) of Fridley, MN.; and a sister, Beverly (Don) Pierce of Huntington Beach, CA.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, June Bartels, Velda Dibble and Ivanette Erickson.
